Luka Doncic scores 73 points in win over Hawks, 4th-most in NBA history

January 29, 2024

Luka Doncic etches his name in the NBA record books with a remarkable performance, achieving a feat accomplished by only three other players in league history.

On the fourth anniversary of Kobe Bryant's passing, Dallas Mavericks' superstar Luka Doncic tapped into his 'Mamba Mentality' on Friday night, scoring an impressive 73 points and leading the Mavericks to a 148-143 road victory against the Atlanta Hawks.

Joining the elite company of Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant, and David Thompson, Doncic becomes one of the select few to score at least 73 points in a single NBA game. While Chamberlain holds the record with 100 points, Doncic's 73-point display stands as the highest-scoring performance since Bryant's iconic 81-point game in 2006.

Reflecting on his historic night, Doncic shared, "I was just going, taking whatever the defense gave me. In the second half, they doubled me all the time, so I tried to make some plays. Sometimes I attacked and I would break the double, so just seeing the game."

The victory was crucial for Dallas, who entered the game on a three-game losing streak, including a significant loss to rival Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns.

“We played great, we played great offense,” Doncic said. "I just wanted to get the win, as we have been struggling lately.”

In an extraordinary shooting performance, the 2024 All-Star starter recorded a remarkable 75.8% from the floor (25-of-33), nailed 8 three-pointers, and made 15-of-16 free throws. Notably, Doncic becomes the first player in NBA history to score 70+ points while shooting 75% or higher from the field.

Displaying brilliance throughout the game, he scored 18, 23, 16, and 16 points across the four quarters. When faced with physicality from the Hawks, Doncic credited teammates Dante Exum and Josh Green for their crucial contributions.

“It was great, just trust, I always trust my teammates. Making the right play, they’re (Exum and Green) always big time for us. Just the next man up mentality. Both were great today,” Doncic remarked.

On the opposing side, Trae Young, who was traded for Doncic in 2018, had 30 points and 11 assists for the Hawks, while Jalen Johnson added 25 points in the losing effort.
